Big Ditch Park

A series of floods from 1896-1906 created the Big Ditch, named after the Panama Canal, where Main Street once stood. The watercourse of San Vicente Creek runs 55 feet below street grade. The 1885 Warren house, located at the Market Street pedestrian bridge, is the last remaining building from Main Street.

Wall and stabilization work was done during the New Deal in the 1930s through the national Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). In 1977-78, local businesses and individuals created the first section of Big Ditch Park. MainStreet continued the park development in 1997 and 2002. The dedication of the completed Phase II was August 24, 2002 -- 100 years to the date of the biggest flood.

Big Ditch Park is now a shady greenbelt in the center of town, and a popular spot for strolling, sitting, taking photos, and having lunch. MainStreet's Celebration of Spring Festival is held in the park each April with arts and crafts, vendors, music, and more.
